COIL Faculty Fellows Program-Canada

MSU's Canadian Studies Center (CSC) and the Center for Global Learning and Innovation (as the Global Youth Advancement Network and the Office for Education Abroad) are pleased to announce the launch of the COIL Faculty Fellows Program-Canada. We foresee that this CSC-sponsored initiative will offer benefits at different levels:

  • Institutional: MSU and Canadian institutions will advance internationalization plans, increase access to global learning, and forge new (or strengthen existing) institutional partnerships;
  • Faculty: through global collaborations, CSC-affiliated faculty at MSU and Canadian faculty will design and implement COILed projects and have the opportunity to advance COIL scholarship;
  • Students: through COILed projects embedded in academic courses, MSU and Canadian students will engage in virtual cultural exchanges and gain global competencies.

This new model of a fellowship program will offer to CSC-affiliated faculty at MSU:

Facilitation of collaborations with Canadian faculty Provided by the Canadian Studies Center
Small stipends to support professional and/or project development Provided by the Canadian Studies Center
Accelerated COIL training to support the design and implementation of COILed projects Provided by the Center for Global Learning and Innovation

Program Launch: Info Session Webinar

We kicked-off this new fellowship program with an Info Session Webinar on Friday January 24 (9-10am Eastern Time); below you can find a video recording of the event, covering important aspects about COIL and the COIL Faculty Fellows Program-Canada. Under the video, you can find a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), reflecting questions received during the Info Session Webinar.

FAQ about COIL and Fellowship Program

- What are specific challenges in having courses from different disciplines come together? How did you identify the shared area of interest?
Dr. Tessmer: Challenges might exist even when the courses are from the same discipline, so my suggestion is to be flexible and spend some time brainstorming ideas together with your potential global partner. With an open mind from both sides, you will be able to easily identify a common interest, which can be based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for example: https://sdgs.un.org/goals

- Is Padlet free to use? Were there any out-of-pocket costs associated with COIL for instructors or students?
Dr. Tessmer: Padlet offers free and paid versions; the free version allows only for a limited number of visual boards (or Padlet walls) but regardless of the version used, there is no cost for students to use it. Learn more about Padlet: https://padlet.com/

- Could you talk a bit more about what the process of assisting with the identification of Canadian partners might look like?
Dr. Malouin: Once we (MSU's Canadian Studies Center) learn more about your interests, we can help facilitate such a partnership based on the list of Canadian institutions that are already connected to us and additional networking if needed. Identifying Canadian partners might be a process based on similar academic disciplines, specific topic of interest, etc.

- Who is eligible to join the upcoming COIL training?
Dr. Malouin: The online training happening on February 7 is open to Canadian Studies Center core faculty. As part of the training, participants will also receive: 1) A step-by-step workbook from the Canadian Studies Center and Center for Global Learning and Innovation on COIL; 2) Tailored support identifying Canadian COIL partners and pursuing memorandums of understanding with partner institutions; 3) The opportunity to apply for $500 (USD) in seed money to support COIL collaborations; and 4) Additional technological and curricular support.

- How can I join the Canadian Studies Center as a core faculty member?
Dr. Malouin: If you are an MSU faculty member interested in joining the MSU Canadian Studies Center as a core faculty member, please email us at csc(at)msu.edu.

- I am already a core faculty member of the Canadian Studies Center; where can I find more information about the upcoming COIL Training?
Dr. Malouin: For more information or to RSVP, please email the Canadian Studies Center at csc(at)msu.edu.
